Scholarships
The Children of the Confederacy General Organization offers
several scholarships to its members. Recipients must have active
records in the Children of the Confederacy, must have and
maintain a 3.0 overall GPA, and must be endorsed by their
Chapters and Divisions (or Chapters where no Divisions).
The four scholarships currently offered are:
- Wittichen, Wilcox, Dickens Scholarship Fund
At the 24th General Convention in Raleigh, North
Carolina, it was passed to establish a new CofC administered
scholarship. At the 25th General Convention in Atlanta,
Georgia, it was passed to name this new scholarship in honor
of three of the ladies who were instrumental in the
Organization of the General Organization: Mrs. Murray Forbes
Wittichen, Mrs. John M. Wilcox and Mrs. William Dickens.
This fund is now complete. This scholarship was first
awarded at the General Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia
in 1986. Scholarship information may be obtained from the
Second Vice President General CofC.
- Silver Jubilee Scholarship Fund
The Silver Jubilee Fund was established in 1977 in order
to obtain funds for the publication of a twenty-five year
history of the Children of the Confederacy and other special
related projects. A decision was made to incorporate the
twenty-five year history of the Children of the Confederacy
in volume three of The History of the United Daughters of
the Confederacy. The Silver Jubilee Fund was then
established as a scholarship fund. The first scholarship was
awarded at the General Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia
in 1986. Scholarship information may be obtained from the
Second Vice President General CofC.
- Miller-Coulter Scholarship Fund
The Miller-Coulter Scholarship Fund was established in
1986, by Mrs. Mary Coulter Miller and Mrs. Dorothy Coulter
Weber in honor of Jody Miller Council, President General
CofC 1977- 1978; Paul D. Miller, President General CofC 1981
- 1982; Edward G. Miller, President General CofC 1985-1986;
and in memory of Mrs. Evelyn Hood Coulter. Mrs. Coulter was
the inspiration behind a family of thirty members of the
Children of the Confederacy which included grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews. Three of her
grandchildren who were all from the same family went on to
serve the Children of the Confederacy in the capacity of
President General. The initial gifts to the scholarship were
given by Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Weber.
- Golden Anniversary Scholarship Fund
The Golden Anniversary Scholarship Fund was established in
2001 to honor the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the founding
of the Children of the Confederacy. Additional funds were
raised throughout 2002-2004 and at the 2004 Convention to
fully fund the scholarship. At the 50th Annual General
Convention in Charlotte it was voted to take the initial
funding of the first scholarship from the principle so that
the scholarship could be awarded for the first time at the
50th Convention. The first scholarship was awarded in 2004
to President General Jonathan Hicks.
All scholarships can be automatically renewed each year if
the recipient's grades remain at the required level.
The Scholarship Committee consists of the President General,
Director General, Second Vice President General, and Treasurer
General. For more information about General scholarships,
contact the Second Vice President General.
