Greetings to the members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It is with love, appreciation and humility that I have accepted the highest honor that you can bestow on me, that of serving as President General of our beloved United Daughters of the Confederacy.
We have a tremendous amount of work to accomplish in 2008–2010. With your support, we will have two outstanding years.
Let us resolve to put aside personal differences and work for the good of our Organization. Let us always remember that we are the UNITED Daughters of the Confederacy.
The desire to make certain that every Division and Chapter Where no Division was represented on the Executive Board, either as a Chairman or Committee member, consumed many hours and days upon my return from Richmond last November. It is my hope that you have been pleased with the selections and that each of you have studied the requirements for your respective committee and have become an active participant in the work of our Organization.
In January we commemorated the birthdays of General Robert E. Lee, General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury. These men represented the highest in moral standards and I am sure that to each of them, each was doing his duty as he saw it. If we, with a sense of value and pride and with an awareness of responsibility, accept our duty as members of our Organization, the name of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will be universally honored.
Membership is one of our most pressing goals, along with a greater circulation of our UDC Magazine. If we expect to grow we must increase our membership. It is also imperative that the membership on Chapter and Division levels understand the history and function of our Organization and much related information is included in each issue of the magazine.
Your President General and the other General Officers take their responsibility very seriously and are completely dedicated to doing the very best that they can. If there are problems, please call or write before you criticize, and if a mistake has been made every effort will be made to correct it.
I look forward to meeting each of you during my term. My hope is that we can join together to accomplish the goals outlined by those dedicated Daughters years ago. I also hope that we can establish some new and immediate goals that will create new interest and enthusiasm and will generate new members to insure our future.
As heirs to a Confederate heritage we have a special task of keeping this heritage alive for successive generations As time becomes more removed from this period of history, our challenges are greater.
During this administration I want us to
- PRESERVE - our building and our records;
- PROTECT - the many things that the organization has built, erected, purchased and donated, especially in areas where there is no longer a UDC presence;
- PROMOTE - ourselves.
You will be hearing more about these three P's in the future. Please join me as we begin to look into the future and share your ideas, your time and become involved. Let us join hands for great accomplishments in 2008–2010.
