TENURE
Undergraduate scholarships are available for a maximum of four years or until the student completes the course in under four years or fails to make a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA). Students must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and carry a minimum of 12 hours each semester. Graduate scholarships are available at the Master's level (2-year maximum unless a 3-year program) and Ph.D. level (3-year maximum).CANDIDATES
Each Chapter and Chapter Where No Division may submit any number of candidates for the undergraduate scholarships; each candidate will be considered for any scholarship for which he/she is determined to be eligible. Each Chapter and Chapter Where No Division must designate the graduate scholarships for which the candidate is to be considered.Two members of the same family may not hold scholarships simultaneously.QUALIFICATIONS
- An applicant must be the lineal descendant of an eligible Confederate (that is, one who served honorably in the Confederate Army, Navy, or Civil Service or who gave Material Aid to the Cause). An applicant who is a collateral descendant must be a member of the CofC or the UDC.
- Applicants must be endorsed by the President and the Second Vice President/Education Chairman of Chapter and Division and by the Second Vice President General.
- Applicants must complete and submit the official UDC General scholarship packet. Final approval of applications shall be made by the Second Vice President General.
- An applicant must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average in high school.
- Applicant must pass entrance examination of prospective college or university.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Incomplete applications will be given no consideration by the General Education Committee. Application and documentation will be returned only if sufficient postage is included. The following materials are required.
- Wallet-sized photograph of head and shoulders to be used in the UDC Magazine
- General Scholarship Application Checklist
- Copy of Confederate ancestor's proof of service (copy of approved UDC or CofC application is acceptable). If Civil Service or Material Aid, submit proof from authoritative source and give full description of service. If military service, submit an official Confederate military record that shows the unit and state. A Confederate military record may be obtained from Broadfoot Publishing Company, 1907 Buena Vista Circle, Wilmington, NC 28411; the archives of Confederate records in the various states; the National Archives and Records Services, Washington, DC 20408; or UDC Business Office, Memorial Building, 328 North Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23220-4057. Requests made to the Business Office must be accompanied by a check ($15.00 members/prospectives; $25.00 non-members; $6.00 postage/handling) and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
- General Scholarship Application Form
- Copy of applicant's birth certificate
- Lineage Form -- with line of descent from Confederate ancestor, linking applicant to ancestor by generations
- Letter of endorsement from sponsoring UDC Chapter
- Letter of recommendation from recent teacher/counselor with objective evaluation of applicant
- Financial Report Form -- must be signed by applicant and parents or guardian, unless applicant is financially independent (Note: Parents' signatures are not required on financial statements for graduate students and Walter Reed Smith Scholarship applicants)
- Official grade transcript from previous year and fall semester/quarter from current school
- Letter from applicant (maximum 300 words) pledging to make the best possible use of the opportunity offered through the scholarship and outlining goals and plans for obtaining them. In this letter, it is suggested the student evaluate the significance of a Southern heritage in today's world.
